Curriculum

A) The Primary Years Programme (PYP)
The Ibadan International School is currently the first school in Nigeria to receive authorization from the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) to offer the Primary Years Programme (PYP). We are implementing the Primary Years Programme (PYP) of the International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) for students from Nursery up to Grade Six. The PYP is an international curricular framework specifically designed for the needs of children aged 3-12. It focuses on the total growth of the developing child and takes into account their social, physical, emotional and cultural needs. At the same time, it gives children a strong academic foundation in all the major areas of knowledge.  In the PYP, teachers and students generate concept questions which they use to conduct inquiry into significant content. Through this inquiry process, students gain knowledge and skills and are encouraged to engage in responsible action. They do all of this in a school climate that fosters positive attitudes and develops the concept of internationalism. The PYP programme seeks to develop pupils to become:

  • Inquirers,
  • Thinkers,
  • Effective Communicators,
  • Risk Takers,
  • Knowledgeable,
  • Principled,
  • Caring,
  • Open-minded,
  • Balanced, and
  • Evaluators of their own learning (Reflective).

The curriculum in the PYP is taught through six transdisciplinary themes:

  1. who we are,
  2. where we are in place and time,
  3. how we express ourselves
  4. how the world works,
  5. how we organize ourselves and
  6. sharing the planet.

These themes are intended to help children make sense of themselves, of other people, of the physical environment and to give them different ways of looking at the world.

B) The International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE)
The students in the final years of study at IIS in the Senior School section prepare for the IGCSE examinations. The IGCSE provides a series of syllabi and assessment programmes to cover the two years of education between the ages of 14-16.

The IGCSE is recognized by universities and colleges throughout the world and is also a preparation for ‘A’ level courses.

A number of staff have been given specific responsibilities to ensure that each curriculum is subject to a process of continuous review and development and that it is appropriately planned, resourced and taught.
